A woman was found dead in Karnataka, and a case has been registered against her husband for dowry harassment. The incident, which occurred in the state’s Hassan district, has prompted a police investigation into the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
The victim’s family has alleged that the woman was subjected to prolonged harassment over dowry demands by her husband and his relatives. According to initial reports, the couple had been married for approximately 13 years. The family has further claimed that despite providing money, jewellery, and even arranging a house for the couple, the harassment persisted.
Local residents have also reportedly come forward, stating they witnessed the victim being assaulted by her husband on a recent occasion. There are also allegations that the husband attempted to sell their newborn child, an act which the victim reportedly opposed. The victim’s brother has stated that previous complaints regarding the alleged harassment had been lodged with the police, but no significant action was taken.
Following the discovery of the woman’s body, the police were alerted, and a case has been registered at the Channarayapatna Town police station. The body has been moved for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. The accused husband, along with other relatives, is reportedly absconding, and efforts are underway by the police to apprehend them.
This case highlights a disturbing trend of dowry-related violence and harassment in Karnataka. In recent months, several similar incidents have been reported across the state, including cases in Bengaluru and Ballari district, where women have died by suicide or allegedly been murdered due to dowry demands and domestic abuse.
In one such incident in Yelahanka, Bengaluru, a 24-year-old woman was found dead, leading to her husband’s arrest on charges of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. Her family alleged foul play, claiming the death was made to appear as a suicide. An autopsy report was pending to ascertain the cause of death.
Another case in Ballari district involved a 24-year-old woman who died by suicide, leaving a death note that cited mental torture and dowry harassment by her husband and in-laws. Her husband was subsequently apprehended by the police.
In a separate incident reported in Bengaluru in September 2025, a 28-year-old bank cashier was found dead, and her husband was arrested for dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. The victim’s mother had filed a complaint alleging harassment by her husband and mother-in-law for dowry.
More recently, in July 2026, a Bengaluru Police sub-inspector was arrested following a complaint by his wife. The charges included dowry harassment, physical assault, criminal intimidation, and an alleged attempt to murder her father. The wife, an advocate, had approached the Director General of Police after claiming her initial complaint was not registered as an FIR.
These cases underscore the persistent issue of dowry-related crimes in Karnataka, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of laws and greater awareness to prevent such occurrences. Police are urging anyone facing similar situations to come forward and report the incidents.
