Madhya Pradesh: Eight Labourers Killed, 32 Injured in Bhind Road Accident

At least eight labourers were killed and 32 others sustained injuries when a pickup truck carrying them collided with a dumper truck in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district early Tuesday, August 18, 2026. The accident occurred around 1 a.m. near Chhimka village on the Bhind-Gwalior National Highway.

The Chenab Times has learned that the labourers were returning to their native village in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, after completing paddy transplantation work in Gwalior. Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver of the pickup truck lost control while attempting to avoid a herd of cattle on the highway. This led the vehicle to veer into the wrong lane, resulting in a head-on collision with an oncoming dumper truck.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as distressing and heart-wrenching. He announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for the families of each of the deceased labourers and directed officials to coordinate with the Madhya Pradesh government for the swift transportation of the mortal remains and to ensure proper medical care for the injured.

The incident has once again brought to the fore the challenges and risks faced by migrant agricultural workers who travel long distances for seasonal employment. Road safety experts have often highlighted that drivers attempting to avoid animals on highways are a significant cause of accidents, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. The investigation into the precise circumstances of the crash is ongoing.
