Delhi Police have arrested two individuals identified as members of the notorious Gogi gang, thwarting their alleged plans to commit an extortion-related crime. The arrests were made on August 19 following specific intelligence received by the authorities.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the apprehended individuals are Chirag, aged 22, a resident of Narela, and Sagar, aged 26, from Sonipat. They were apprehended near the Munak Canal. Authorities recovered a .32-bore semi-automatic pistol loaded with four live cartridges, a country-made single-shot pistol, and two mobile phones from their possession.
During the investigation, police revealed that Chirag was also a wanted suspect in a separate case registered in the Narela Industrial Area. This prior case involved the assault and robbery of a water supply RO supplier and his driver in February. According to police reports, Chirag and an accomplice allegedly rammed their vehicle into the victims’ car, subjected them to an attack with stones and sticks, and subsequently absconded with a gold chain and approximately Rs 40,000 in cash.
The Gogi gang, previously led by Jitender Gogi, has been a significant concern for law enforcement in the Delhi-NCR region. Following Gogi’s death in a courtroom shootout in August 2021, the gang’s operations have reportedly been managed by other figures, with remnants continuing to be involved in criminal activities. These activities have historically included extortion, robbery, and other violent crimes.
The Narela area, where Chirag resides, has been under increased police surveillance due to its proximity to the Haryana border and its historical association with criminal elements. The Munak Canal area, a semi-urban and often less monitored stretch, has also been a known point for illegal activities and transit.
The prompt action by the Delhi Police highlights the ongoing efforts to curb gang-related crime and extortion rackets that affect ordinary citizens and businesses. The recovery of multiple firearms suggests a potential for escalated violence had the suspects not been intercepted. Authorities are continuing their investigation to ascertain the full extent of the Gogi gang’s current network and their planned criminal engagements.
The arrests come amidst a broader crackdown on organized crime in the capital, with police forces in Delhi and neighboring states collaborating to dismantle such networks. The focus remains on identifying kingpins, intercepting their communication, and seizing illicit arms and ammunition. The successful foil of this extortion bid is seen as a significant achievement in these ongoing efforts.
