Two days after the fatal shooting of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Mansa City-2, Inspector Beant Kaur, has been suspended on administrative grounds. The suspension follows widespread protests by residents who alleged a failure by the police to effectively curb the drug menace in the region.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Mansa SSP Vaibhav Chaudhary confirmed the suspension of SHO Beant Kaur with immediate effect. Sources within the state government indicated that further action might be taken against another police officer in connection with the incident.
In a parallel development, police have officially nominated two additional individuals in connection with the murder case. These new nominees are reportedly associates of the primary accused, Ashwani Kumar, with one being a family member. Ashwani Kumar, who is alleged to have obtained his weapons license approximately two years ago, possesses two licensed firearms registered in his name.
Parvinder Singh Jhota, an activist known for his efforts against drug abuse, was shot dead on Tuesday. The incident occurred following a confrontation with chemist Ashwani Kumar concerning drug-related matters at Kumar’s shop in Mansa town. A live video of the confrontation, streamed on Jhota’s Facebook page, intensified public outrage over the killing and the ongoing drug problem.
The confrontation resulted in the death of Jhota and injuries to four other individuals. The Punjab Police have announced the arrest of two persons, including Ashwani Kumar, identified as the main accused. Family members of the accused have also been detained by the authorities as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident and the broader drug trade in the area.
