Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh – An art exhibition featuring works created with millets is currently underway in Visakhapatnam to commemorate World Food Day. The exhibition, which opened on Friday, October 16, 2026, showcases sixteen artworks that narrate the journey of humanity’s relationship with food.
Millet Artistry Depicts Food Evolution
Curated by railway employee and millet artist Meka Vijay Kumar, the exhibition uses various types of millets to depict stages of human food evolution. These stages range from early dependence on natural food sources and settled agriculture to the rise of industrial food processing and modern fast-food culture. The artworks aim to connect artistic expression with broader messages about nutrition, prompting visitors to consider how changing food habits influence health, lifestyles, and the relationship between people and agriculture.
Highlighting Traditional Diets and Health
The exhibition highlights the decline of traditional diets and the increasing reliance on processed foods, exploring the links between food, culture, sustainability, and public health. It also points to the lifestyle diseases associated with changing dietary patterns.
Official Inauguration and Community Encouragement
Visakhapatnam Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra, who inaugurated the exhibition, praised the use of art for social causes and emphasized the importance of preserving India’s food heritage. He encouraged the public to incorporate nutritious millets into their daily meals for a healthier lifestyle. The exhibition is open to the public for three days.
Artist’s Vision and Broader Millet Promotion
Meka Vijay Kumar stated that his team dedicated approximately six months to completing the collection. The exhibition’s central message, according to the artist, is that India’s food heritage can contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future. The initiative is presented as a means to promote better dietary habits and raise awareness about the connection between food and well-being, with a particular focus on reviving traditional foods like millets.
Broader Millet Initiatives in Andhra Pradesh
This event is part of a broader effort to promote millets in Andhra Pradesh, where initiatives are underway to build women-led millet enterprises across the entire value chain, from cultivation and processing to food products and retail. These programs combine training, enterprise planning, and market access to support women in establishing their own small businesses.
Exhibition Details
