Ukraine Drone Strikes Cripple Russian Data Centres, Hampering AI Ambitions

Russia’s advanced digital infrastructure, including key data centres powering vital services and artificial intelligence research, has sustained significant damage from recent Ukrainian drone attacks. The strikes have led to widespread service disruptions across the country, potentially setting back Moscow’s technological development goals.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that multiple data centres belonging to major Russian tech firms and financial institutions have been targeted. These attacks represent a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, with both sides increasingly focusing on crippling critical infrastructure.

Digital Infrastructure Targeted in Conflict

Ukraine has intensified its drone attacks on Russian soil, targeting not only energy facilities but also the digital backbone of the nation. In October, three primary data centres operated by the tech giant Yandex, along with facilities belonging to Russia’s largest bank, Sberbank, and the social media platform VKontakte, were hit. While the affected companies have remained largely reticent about the full extent of the damage, users and businesses across Russia have reported extensive outages affecting cloud services, banking, e-commerce, geolocation, and ride-hailing platforms. Even Yandex’s virtual assistant, Alisa, and its AI chatbots experienced lasting disruptions.

The impact has extended to the Russian judicial system, with reports of arbitration courts cancelling or postponing sessions due to a lack of database access. Experts suggest that repairing the damage could take months, if not years, with a significant concern that Russia’s aspirations to become a leader in artificial intelligence development could be severely impeded. Mikhail Klimarev, head of the Internet Protection Society, noted that these attacks effectively push Russia further behind in the global AI race.

Strategic Implications of Data Centre Attacks

Data centres have emerged as a new frontier in the aerial campaigns between Russia and Ukraine. While Russian forces have targeted Ukraine’s power grid and other essential infrastructure, Ukraine has retaliated by striking Russian oil refineries, causing fuel crises, and hitting large warehouses of major online retailers like Wildberries and Ozon. The recent attacks on data centres followed similar strikes by Moscow on Ukrainian data facilities, which disrupted internet and television broadcasts.

Specific targets included a Yandex data centre in Sasovo, Ryazan region, housing two of its three supercomputers, which was struck on October 8. A data centre in Kaluga was hit the following day, and another in Vladimir on October 11. The Sberbank data centre and AI hub in Balakovo, Saratov region, was attacked on October 14, followed by a strike on a VKontakte data centre in St. Petersburg four days later. These facilities are critical for national digital services.

Vulnerabilities and Future Outlook

Data centres, despite their crucial role, are described as relatively vulnerable targets. Unlike hardened industrial sites, these massive buildings housing servers, power, and cooling systems can suffer significant damage from drones carrying even light explosive payloads. The attacks highlight a broader vulnerability in Russia’s digital infrastructure, particularly given its policy of strict digital sovereignty, which mandates that all data storage must remain within the country, making it more accessible to external strikes.

Nick Reiners, senior geotechnology analyst at Eurasia Group, pointed out that Russia faces a significant challenge in covering its vast territory with adequate air defence systems. He suggested that the concentration of critical data and infrastructure within Russia makes it an easier target. Klimarev predicts that the attacks may push major Russian companies to relocate their data abroad and could lead authorities to reconsider their stringent internet control measures to mitigate future damage. He further suggested that these events might paradoxically save the Russian internet from complete isolation by forcing businesses to seek computing assets in Europe.

The disruption to Yandex, a dominant force in Russia’s digital landscape providing search, cloud storage, payments, and e-commerce, has been particularly acute. Residents have reported an inability to access online orders, process payments, and book taxi rides. For businesses, the impact has been felt in the reliability of cloud services essential for daily operations. The extensive damage to Yandex’s data centres is expected to have a long-lasting effect on its AI development efforts. The company’s supercomputers, ranked among the world’s top 500, including one at the Sasovo data centre ranked 19th, are vital for developing advanced AI models. Experts anticipate that the global deficit of high-end chips and existing sanctions will further complicate and prolong repair efforts, potentially hindering Russia’s ability to compete in the global AI arena.
