Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi on Thursday inaugurated a novel Rs 25-lakh monorail system in the Palohata-II cluster of Mandi district, Himachal Pradesh. The innovative system, part of the HP Shiva Project implemented in the Sundernagar development block, aims to significantly reduce manual labour and enhance the transportation of essential agricultural inputs and harvested fruits for local farmers.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the monorail is expected to streamline operations by facilitating the movement of manure, fertilisers, and other materials across orchard terrains. It will also aid in the efficient transport of harvested produce, thereby alleviating the strenuous physical effort typically associated with moving heavy loads in difficult terrain.
The monorail system has been installed by the Horticulture Department as a pilot initiative. This development follows extensive discussions during the minister’s previous visit to the cluster, where the need for such technological interventions was identified. The performance and efficacy of this initial installation will be rigorously assessed. Based on the outcomes, authorities will determine the feasibility of implementing similar facilities in other horticultural areas across the state, contingent upon the specific local requirements and conditions.
Minister Negi highlighted that similar technological solutions are already in widespread use in horticulturally advanced nations. He expressed optimism that if successfully adapted to the unique environmental and operational conditions of Himachal Pradesh, this system could substantially improve overall orchard management practices.
The HP Shiva Project, as outlined by the minister, represents a substantial undertaking designed to bolster the horticulture-based economy in the state’s lower-lying regions. An estimated Rs 1,100 crore is being allocated for the project, which is projected to develop horticulture across approximately 6,000 hectares spread across seven districts. Despite facing challenges and delays attributed to natural disasters that have affected the region, the implementation of the project has reportedly gained momentum.
Within Mandi district specifically, horticultural development activities are underway across an area of roughly 1,000 hectares. The plantation of various horticultural species in the targeted zones is scheduled for completion by February, marking a significant milestone in the district’s agricultural modernization efforts.
