Upon searching the premises of the disused factory, the police discovered a significant cache of ‘pop-up’ firecrackers. These particular firecrackers are designed to detonate upon impact with a surface, such as being thrown onto the ground. The seized items included loose plastic crackers stored in 14 cardboard boxes. Further searches revealed sealed plastic packets of firecrackers consolidated in 16 cardboard boxes, alongside additional materials contained within nine large plastic sacks. Several large cardboard cartons were also confiscated as part of the operation.

No Licence, Case Registered

Superintendent of Police Vinod Dhiman stated that the caretaker who was present at the defunct factory at the time of the police raid was unable to produce any valid licence, permit, or documentation that would authorize the storage and packing of the recovered firecrackers. In the absence of legal authorisation, the police have registered a case against the individuals involved. The case has been filed under Section 288 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to negligent conduct with respect to explosive substances.

The Baddi police have underscored the critical importance of adhering to stringent safety standards and possessing valid legal permits for the handling of firecrackers and other explosive materials. Officials have issued a clear warning that any individual or entity found to be in violation of these regulations will be subject to severe legal repercussions. The police department has also appealed to the general public to remain vigilant and to report any instances of illegal manufacturing, packing, or storage of firecrackers. Such proactive reporting by citizens is considered crucial in preventing untoward incidents and ensuring public safety, especially during festival periods like Diwali.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding the unregulated trade of fireworks in the region, particularly in industrial hubs like Baddi, which can attract such illicit activities. The seized quantity suggests a potential distribution network that authorities are now working to dismantle. The investigation is expected to delve deeper into the source of the firecrackers and the intended distribution channels, aiming to curb the illegal market that often bypasses safety regulations and can pose significant risks to consumers.

The recovery also brings to the fore the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in monitoring and controlling the illegal trade of explosive materials, which can escalate during festival seasons. The police are intensifying their efforts to crackdown on such illegal operations across the state, with increased patrolling and intelligence gathering in identified vulnerable areas. The focus remains on ensuring that all activities involving explosive substances are conducted within the legal framework to safeguard lives and property.
