Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) has launched a new collection of watches named “HMT Kannadiga” to commemorate the 71st Kannada Rajyotsava, the Statehood Day of Karnataka. The special edition timepieces feature unique design elements that reflect the state’s cultural identity and heritage. The launch event, held in Bengaluru, was attended by Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and marked a significant cultural tribute to the people of Karnataka.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the HMT Kannadiga watches are designed to celebrate Karnataka’s rich language, culture, and history. These distinctive watches incorporate Kannada numerals, a prominent Gandabherunda emblem—a mythical two-headed bird often associated with Karnataka’s royal past—and a representation of the traditional yellow and red Kannada flag. The series name, “HMT Kannadiga,” is also inscribed in Kannada letters, further enhancing the regional connection. The watches are being introduced in two variants: those with leather straps and those with metallic chains, available in four different styles.
The initiative by HMT, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Heavy Industries, aims to foster a deeper connection with the state’s populace by integrating local symbols and language into a widely used product. This move aligns with efforts to revive the iconic public sector watchmaker and strengthen its emotional bond with Kannadigas. Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who spearheaded the unveiling, emphasized the cultural significance of the collection, stating that it serves as a proud symbol of Karnataka’s linguistic pride, artistic traditions, and historical soil. The Minister also highlighted the historical and emotional connection HMT shares with the people of Karnataka, noting his own admiration for HMT watches since childhood.
The HMT Kannadiga watches are positioned within HMT’s premium watch segment, with estimated prices ranging between ₹3,500 and ₹3,600 for the strap and chain variants, respectively. Some reports indicate prices could go up to ₹4,500. The strap variants are equipped with genuine Italian leather straps, adding a touch of international quality to the design. In terms of features, the watches are expected to incorporate modern technology, including a radium glow for enhanced visibility in low-light conditions. The official unveiling took place at the HMT Grounds in north Bengaluru, drawing attention from watch enthusiasts and the general public alike.
The launch has generated considerable interest, with social media platforms abuzz with discussions about the new collection, its pricing, and its release timing. This enthusiasm echoes the public reception of previous special editions. It may be recalled that a similar wave of interest was observed when the “Gandaberunda” collection, another popular Kannada-themed watch, was restocked on Independence Day earlier this year, selling out within hours. Sources suggest that the Gandaberunda collection will be available again shortly. Watch enthusiasts have expressed hope that HMT will consider increasing production for popular models like Gandaberunda and Roman, given their widespread appeal within collector communities.
HMT Limited, a Government of India enterprise, has a legacy dating back to 1961 as a pioneer in watch manufacturing in India. The company has been making efforts to revive its brand, which holds significant sentimental value for many Indians, particularly in Karnataka. The HMT Kannadiga collection represents a strategic effort to leverage regional pride and cultural identity to boost market presence and consumer engagement. The company also offers a wide array of other collections, including Bahadur, Stellar, Tareeq, and Janata Automatic, catering to diverse preferences.
The celebration of Kannada Rajyotsava by HMT with a dedicated watch collection underscores the growing trend of brands integrating regional cultural elements into their product offerings to connect more deeply with local consumers. The initiative is expected to resonate well with the Kannadiga population, reinforcing their cultural identity through a tangible and functional product. The Ministry of Heavy Industries has indicated ongoing efforts to revitalize public sector undertakings like HMT, focusing on innovation and market relevance.
