Thrashing of journalists: Police officer removed from his position, action taken against others

DGP Dilbag Singh stated on Wednesday that a police officer who led a team of uniformed men to lathi-charge journalists while doing professional duties here has been removed from his position.

Several other cops have also been transferred or attached, according to official sources.

For “undesirable actions,” the DGP had directed the SSP Srinagar to take urgent action against the police officer.

The top police officer told the Kashmir-based news agency GNS that the officer had been removed from his position.

Meanwhile, three cops have been assigned to DPL while six others have been transferred, according to official sources.

On the 8th Muharram, police used lathi charges against journalists covering protests by Shia mourners at Lal Chowk. A photojournalist’s camera was also damaged.

Earlier, the DGP stated that he was concerned about a police officer’s inappropriate behaviour with certain media guys in Srinagar yesterday. He had requested that SSP Srinagar take prompt action against the wrongdoing cop.”
