Impersonation Case: Man found innocent after police clarification

In a high drama of events, after The Chenab Times carried the news regarding a “Man Impersonating as a Lawyer in Doda’s Thathri”, As already mentioned, he was handed over to police, not arrested. The police clarified the incident after 7 hours of the publication of the news, in which the man was found innocent in the impersonation case.

How events start

A message was shared on WhatsApp regarding the man, namely Mukhtyar Ahmed, posing as a lawyer in NT court at Thathri, and the message was about warning the public to be aware. The message also mentioned a case of Mukhtyar in Jammu during the tenure of Adv B.S. Salathia (Bar Association President) and the message also claims that Mukhtyar fled after the enquiry.

When the same message was forwarded to The Chenab Times, we contacted Naib Tehsildar Thathri for the case, and he said, “A person visited my court regarding a case under sections 107 and 110 CrPC and the man was concealing his identity.” Later, when we asked the man why he was concealing his identity, he said that he was misunderstood.

When we further investigated the case, the messages were shared on WhatsApp to aware people, and The Chenab Times was also told to carry the story in the public interest in order to further educate the people.

As you have read the whole story on Wednesday, the incident has been clarified by the police. Initially, when we contacted the police on Tuesday, the call was not answered. But after the publication of the story, the man contacted The Chenab Times for clarification and explained the whole event. The Chenab Times again contacted police on Wednesday and police clarified the incident and said that the man was handed over to police on a verbal request by Naib Tehsildar Thathri for verification of whether he was impersonating as a lawyer or not. They further said that police also contacted the concerned advocate whose name was used in the Vakalatnama, a copy of which CT also received. The Advocate also clarified that Mukhtyar is working with him as Munshi (a clerk). After the clarification, the police let Mukhtyar leave the police station.

But the same clarification was not provided to The Chenab Times till the publication of the story, despite their contacting every relevant official regarding the case. However, when we found that the man was innocent in this case, we again contacted him regarding the past allegations against him. He denied all the allegations and said that all those allegations were baseless and were only meant to malign the image of Mukhtyar Ahmed.

Conclusion

Mukhtyar Ahmed, a clerk of an advocate, became the victim of misinformation which was not clarified by any of the officials initially. When The Chenab Times found that he was found innocent in the impersonation case, we contacted all the officials again and compiled this report.
