Israel Cuts Water, Electricity and Fuel Supply to Palestinians after Order of ‘Complete Siege’ on Gaza

In the midst of escalating tensions and violence between Israel and Palestinian factions, Israel has taken measures to impose restrictions on the Gaza Strip. The move includes cutting off water, electricity, and fuel supplies to the territory, as well as implementing a “complete siege.” The situation has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in the densely populated enclave.

The decision to cut off water supply from Israel to Gaza was announced by Israel’s Energy Minister, who also confirmed that electricity and fuel had been suspended the previous day. These measures came as part of Israel’s response to the deadly clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants, primarily Hamas, which had erupted along the border.

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant’s declaration of a “complete siege” on Gaza further exacerbated the already dire situation. Gaza heavily relies on Israel for essential resources, with approximately 10 percent of its annual water supply coming from its neighboring country. Israel maintains control over Gaza’s airspace, shoreline, and border crossings, which allows it to regulate the movement of people and goods in and out of the territory.

The decision to implement these restrictions followed the deadliest day of violence in the region in nearly 50 years. Israeli authorities, convened by the Security Cabinet, decided to cut off the supply of electricity, fuel, and goods to Gaza in response to ongoing hostilities. The Israeli military had initiated an offensive operation aimed at restoring the security of its citizens, responding to attacks by Hamas that began on Saturday.

Critics have argued that cutting off essential services such as water, food, and electricity to a civilian population can potentially be considered a violation of international humanitarian law, particularly when it leads to disproportionate harm to civilians and is not justified by military necessity.

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, has stated, “The @UN must be granted access to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians who are trapped and helpless in the Gaza Strip. I appeal to the international community to mobilize immediate humanitarian support for this endeavor.”

The toll of the conflict has been devastating on both sides, with casualties mounting. In southern Israel, 700 people have lost their lives in the wake of the Hamas attacks across the border, primarily targeting communities and towns near Gaza. In the Gaza Strip, around 493 people, including many civilians and children, have been killed as a result of Israeli military airstrikes launched in response to the Hamas assault.

Despite the Israeli military’s reported success in regaining control of border communities taken by Hamas fighters during the conflict, Palestinian militants have continued to launch barrages of rockets. These attacks have triggered air raid sirens in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, further intensifying the volatile situation in the region.

The ongoing hostilities between Israel and Gaza have raised concerns on a global scale, with humanitarian organizations calling for an immediate ceasefire and a resolution to the conflict. The international community is closely monitoring developments in the region, hoping for a peaceful resolution to prevent further loss of life and suffering among innocent civilians.
