New Delhi, Feb 2 – Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Mehraj Malik has alleged that he was forced to vacate a hotel in Delhi’s Jangpura area at 1 a.m. on police instructions, a claim that has drawn sharp political reactions.
Malik, who represents the Doda constituency in Jammu and Kashmir, said the hotel owner informed him that authorities had directed them not to accommodate AAP members, prompting his immediate eviction.
“Had to check out at 1 AM from hotel room at Jangpura. Owner said police has said not to allow anyone from Aam Aadmi Party to stay in hotel and directed them to check out AAP volunteers immediately. BJP has fallen to this level now; even after being an MLA, I am thrown out of a hotel in Jangpura,” Malik wrote on social media.
The AAP’s Delhi unit condemned the incident, calling it “another example of Amit Shah’s hooliganism” and alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was behind the move. The party also questioned whether the Election Commission was aware of the development.
There has been no immediate response from the BJP or Delhi Police regarding the allegations.
Malik, a social worker-turned-politician from Jammu and Kashmir, made history in October 2024 by securing AAP’s first and only win in the region. His tenure has not been without controversy. In February 2023, he was arrested during a land eviction drive in Jammu, accused of inciting stone-pelting during the operation, though he was later released on bail.
The latest incident has reignited concerns about political interference and the role of law enforcement agencies in such matters. Observers have called for an impartial investigation to determine whether power was misused to target an elected representative.
The alleged eviction comes amid escalating tensions between AAP and the BJP, particularly in the lead-up to the upcoming elections. AAP leaders have frequently accused the BJP-led central government of using law enforcement agencies to suppress opposition voices.
Political analysts say such incidents could further strain relations between the ruling BJP and opposition parties, potentially influencing voter sentiment.
