SRINAGAR: The Drug Control Authority in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir has suspended the licences of eleven establishments and taken action against several others for alleged violations of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. The enforcement drive spanned across various locations within the district, including Kulgam town, Pahloo, Devsar, DK Marg, Qazigund, Frisal, Kadder, Behibagh, and Tengjan.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the intensive raids and inspections were conducted to bolster surveillance and prevent the illicit use of scheduled drugs. In addition to licence suspensions, multiple businesses faced show-cause notices, and some were temporarily sealed as part of the operation.
The enforcement efforts were carried out in collaboration with the local police, with officers from Police Stations Behibagh, Kulgam, Qaimoh, Qazigund, and Devsar providing support. This coordinated approach aimed to ensure stricter adherence to drug regulations across the region.
During the drive, officials also engaged in awareness programmes for local chemists. These sessions focused on the critical importance of maintaining accurate records for drug sales and ensuring that scheduled medicines are dispensed exclusively upon presentation of valid prescriptions from registered medical practitioners. This initiative seeks to foster a culture of compliance and professional responsibility within the pharmaceutical retail sector.
Reinforcing the regulatory framework, the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kulgam previously imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 in April 2026. This penalty was levied in a case initiated by the Drug Control Authority concerning the improper maintenance of sale records for scheduled drugs, underscoring the legal consequences of non-compliance.
The ongoing regulatory oversight by the Drug Control Authority Kulgam signifies a concerted effort to uphold public health standards by ensuring that all pharmaceutical establishments operate within the stringent guidelines set forth by national drug laws. The administration’s proactive measures are intended to safeguard the availability of safe and effective medicines to the public and to curb any potential malpractice in the drug trade.
