SRINAGAR: Authorities in Budgam district of central Kashmir have issued an advisory declaring natural spring water sources in parts of Khag unsafe for drinking. Residents have been urged to avoid consumption without taking necessary precautions.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Office of the Assistant Executive Engineer, PHE Sub-Division Beerwah, issued an official notice indicating that water from springs located in Zargar Mohalla, Apri Bagh, and Sugin areas of Khag has tested as unsafe for drinking. These findings are based on reports provided by the Block Medical Officer (BMO) Khag.
The advisory explicitly directs the general public in the affected localities to use the water solely for washing and other non-potable purposes until further instructions are issued. In instances where consumption is unavoidable, particularly during extreme circumstances, the water is recommended to be consumed only after thorough boiling as a safety measure.
The Public Health Engineering (PHE) department has stated its intention to undertake independent sampling and testing of the affected water bodies. The department has committed to implementing necessary technical procedures and remedial actions with priority to restore the water quality and ensure it becomes safe for consumption at the earliest possible time.
Local administrative and police officials have been informed of the advisory to facilitate its wider dissemination among the public. The advisory also appeals for public cooperation in adhering to the issued guidelines to protect community health.
