Left Parties to Field Candidates Separately

The CPI(M) will field its candidate in Madurantakam, while the CPI will contest from Dharapuram. The candidates for these seats are expected to be announced on September 15. This move has turned the by-elections into a five-cornered contest, involving the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the Naam Tamilar Katchi, and the independent Left candidates.
Continued Support for TVK Government
Despite their independent stance in the by-elections, both the CPI and CPI(M) have affirmed their commitment to continue providing outside support to the incumbent TVK government. This support, initially extended after the 2026 Assembly elections, was aimed at respecting the electoral mandate and preventing potential presidential rule in the state. The parties had made it clear from the outset that their support would not involve joining the state cabinet.
Reasons Behind the Independent Strategy
The decision to contest separately, even while supporting the government, has been described by some within the Left as a political paradox. However, party leaders have indicated that this strategy is intended to assert their independent electoral strength and address key public issues. This move also aims to counter any potential indirect influence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The by-elections are seen as a crucial test for the TVK government, which relies on external support to maintain its majority in the Assembly.
Background of the Bypolls
The vacancies in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram constituencies arose following the resignations of AIADMK legislators Maragatham Kumaravel and P. Sathyabama, respectively. Both legislators had won the 2026 Assembly elections on AIADMK tickets before resigning and joining the ruling TVK. The Election Commission of India announced by-elections for these two seats, while by-elections for other vacant seats are pending due to ongoing legal cases. The TVK has fielded Maragatham Kumaravel and P. Sathyabama as its candidates for the Madurantakam and Dharapuram seats, respectively.
