Srinagar: The Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) Jammu and Kashmir convened a significant meeting in Srinagar, chaired by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. The gathering, which brought together over 70 Ulema and Mashaikh from across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, focused on contemporary societal challenges and the imperative of unity within the Muslim Ummah. This marks the first major Ulema conference held in Srinagar in over two years, following official permission for the event.
MMU Addresses Pressing Social Concerns
The MMU conference adopted two key resolutions addressing a spectrum of social issues plaguing the region. A primary concern highlighted was the rising tide of drug and substance abuse, alongside an increase in suicides and self-harm incidents among the youth. The resolutions also pointed to challenges related to mental health, the irresponsible use of social media, the erosion of family bonds, and environmental degradation.

The emphasis was placed on creating safe spaces for individuals, particularly young people and families experiencing emotional distress, to voice their concerns without fear of stigma. The resolutions urged Imams and Ulema to be more attuned to the signs of emotional distress and to foster compassionate responses, guiding those in need toward professional counseling and mental health support.
The conference proposed that mosques and madrasas should evolve into centers for guidance, youth engagement, and community welfare. It was also noted that in cases of serious mental health concerns, the involvement of trained professionals is essential. The MMU also decided to implement a coordinated campaign through Friday sermons across participating mosques to address common social issues. This initiative aims to raise awareness and promote collective action on matters impacting the community’s social fabric.
Emphasis on Unity of the Ummah
The second resolution adopted at the MMU meet underscored the importance of unity within the Muslim Ummah, emphasizing sectarian harmony and mutual respect, even amidst doctrinal differences. This resolution comes at a time when the Muslim community faces numerous challenges both locally and globally.

The MMU has expressed its commitment to strengthening inter-sectarian understanding and collective guidance for the people. The organization plans to establish a committee to remain vigilant, particularly during sensitive periods like Muharram, to counter any attempts by disruptive elements to incite discord.
