SRINAGAR, October 31— National Conference (NC) Member of Parliament Aga Ruhullah Mehdi reiterated on Saturday his intention to resign from both the party and his Lok Sabha membership on November 3. He stated that his decision is principle-based, stemming from the perceived failure of the party leadership to uphold electoral promises made to the public.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Mehdi addressed reporters in Budgam, confirming the November 3 date for his resignation, which coincides with the death anniversary of his father, Martyr Aga Syed Mehdi. A public event is planned for the occasion at Behisht-e-Zehra Park near the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Budgam.
Addressing speculation about potential destabilisation of the elected government, Mehdi clarified that he does not endorse or wish to be involved in any form of horse-trading. He asserted that governments should be allowed to complete their constitutional terms without being undermined through such practices.
Mehdi explained that his disagreement with the party leadership is not personal, nor is it related to any pursuit of political office. Instead, his dissent is focused on fundamental principles and electoral commitments, particularly concerning the restoration of Article 370, constitutional rights, reservation policies, and the release of political prisoners.
He specifically questioned his continued tenure as a Member of Parliament under the National Conference banner, given the party president Dr. Farooq Abdullah’s recent remarks on Article 370. Mehdi expressed his reluctance to hold a parliamentary seat if the party leadership is no longer committed to advocating for the restoration of Article 370 and the protection of constitutional rights. He emphasised his desire to avoid being associated with any form of confusion or misrepresentation.
The dissenting MP indicated his readiness to face the political repercussions of his decision. He also suggested that if his stance resonates with the public, another opportunity to represent them in Parliament could emerge in the future.
Mehdi extended an appeal to individuals who value principled politics, transparency, and political accountability to attend the planned gathering. He envisioned the event as a platform for like-minded individuals from across Jammu and Kashmir to convene and discuss these issues.
