Union Home Minister Amit Shah has declared that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already secured its victory in the first phase of the West Bengal assembly elections, asserting the party will win 110 seats. Addressing an election rally on Friday, Shah also promised the swift implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the state, with a particular focus on the Matua community, should the BJP form the government.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that polling for the first phase, held on April 23, covered 152 of the 294 Assembly constituencies in West Bengal, recording a turnout exceeding 92 percent. Shah expressed confidence that the BJP’s performance in this initial phase was sufficient to unseat the incumbent Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. The second phase of polling is scheduled for April 29, covering 142 constituencies.
Shah directly challenged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s opposition to the CAA, accusing her administration of denying citizenship rights to members of the Matua community and fostering an atmosphere of fear. He stated, “Didi does not allow the implementation of the CAA law. You form the government of the lotus (BJP’s poll symbol), and after May 5, the BJP government will ensure that every brother and sister of the Matua community receives citizenship.”
The Union Home Minister highlighted that the Matua community, a significant refugee population with origins in Bangladesh, would no longer face uncertainty regarding their citizenship under a BJP government. He assured the community, “People of the Matua community do not need to live in fear anymore.”
Furthermore, Shah launched a pointed critique of the TMC government’s record on women’s safety. He referenced several incidents, including those in RG Kar, Sandeshkhali, and alleged crimes at a law college in Kolkata, to underscore his points. “In the last 15 years of TMC rule, it is women who have suffered the most. Be it RG Kar, Sandeshkhali, or South Calcutta Law College, every incident has exposed the complete failure of Didi’s government in ensuring women’s safety,” he stated.
Shah also took exception to reported remarks attributed to Banerjee advising women to refrain from going out after 7 pm. He characterized such advice as a symptom of the government’s failure to provide basic security. “Didi says women should not step out after 7 pm. But after May 5, when the BJP forms the government, even if a girl decides to go out at 1 am, nobody will dare raise an eye on her,” Shah declared, promising a marked improvement in public safety under BJP governance.
