Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Sunday that governments led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) across 21 states are expected to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) before the year 2029.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Shah made these remarks while addressing reporters in Mumbai, reflecting on the achievements of the central government over the past 12 years and the BJP’s 25-year political journey under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He asserted that the abolition of triple talaq has conferred equal rights upon Muslim women and expressed confidence that the UCC, already implemented in several states, would be a reality in 21 BJP-NDA ruled states before the next general elections scheduled for 2029.
The Home Minister also highlighted significant reforms in the country’s criminal justice system, noting the introduction of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He claimed that these measures have led to a substantial increase in conviction rates in several states, with some recording a 30 percent rise within a single year. Furthermore, a new system is reportedly being established to expedite the delivery of justice, aiming to resolve cases within a three-year timeframe.
On the matter of national security, Shah reiterated the government’s stance on the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A, emphasizing that the significant constitutional changes were executed without any loss of life or bloodshed. He affirmed that Kashmir has now been fully integrated into the Indian Union. The Union Home Minister also pointed to the end of decades-long Naxalite activity and the signing of over 14 peace agreements in the North-Eastern regions of India. He stated that more than 9,000 individuals have surrendered in the Northeast, and the region is now progressing on a path of development.
Shah further underscored the government’s policy of zero tolerance towards militancy, citing surgical strikes, air strikes, and Operation Sindoor as examples. Regarding the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur and the potential use of the 1951 baseline, Shah indicated that the central government is engaged in discussions with its allies and political parties in Manipur. Any decisions made will be communicated, he added.
When questioned about the detection of illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators in cities like Mumbai, the Home Minister declined to disclose the specific tools or methods employed by the government for their identification, stating that such information could compromise the operation. He reaffirmed the government’s firm commitment to identifying and deporting all illegal infiltrators from the country, describing it as a systematic, one-by-one process.
In relation to the government’s campaign against drug abuse, Shah mentioned the recent launch of the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ and his intention to visit every state as part of this initiative. He detailed ongoing discussions with chief ministers and plans for comprehensive meetings to ensure the campaign reaches the grassroots level, expressing certainty that India will achieve victory over drugs.
