Police in Northern Ireland have raised a security alert in Dunmurry, a town on the outskirts of Belfast, following reports of a car bomb explosion near a police station. The incident has led to the evacuation of nearby homes and prompted warnings for the public to avoid the affected area.
The Chenab Times has learned that the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) responded to the reports on Sunday. The explosion reportedly occurred outside the Dunmurry police station on Saturday night. Details regarding the motive behind the alleged attack have not yet been released by authorities.
Sorcha Eastwood, a Member of the UK Parliament representing the Lagan Valley constituency, southwest of Belfast, expressed distress over the incident. “It is distressing and disturbing to wake up to the news that a car bomb exploded outside Dunmurry police station last night,” she stated. Eastwood highlighted the potential danger posed by the explosion in a densely populated area with residential housing, small businesses, and people out on a Saturday night. “It is only through the grace of God that there are no casualties,” she added.
This incident follows a similar event in Lurgan, approximately 20 miles southwest of Dunmurry, which occurred last month. In that instance, police described the device as a “crude but viable” improvised bomb. Authorities reported that two masked individuals allegedly intercepted a delivery driver, placed the bomb in the trunk of his vehicle, and forced him at gunpoint to transport it to the Lurgan police station. Following the evacuation of around 100 homes, police conducted a controlled explosion of the device.
The PSNI attributed the Lurgan attack to dissident Republican groups, characterizing it as a “pathetic attempt to remain relevant and provoke fear.” The Good Friday Accords, signed in 1998, largely brought an end to decades of conflict between Republican groups opposing British rule and loyalists seeking to maintain the region’s ties with the United Kingdom. However, splinter groups that reject the peace process continue to carry out sporadic attacks.
