A 73-year-old watchman, Ramchandra Shehu Chavan, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Pune court for the brutal murder of his wife in 2015. The court convicted Chavan for murder and related offences, citing consistent eyewitness accounts and forensic evidence that proved the charge beyond reasonable doubt.
Court’s Verdict and Sentencing
The Additional Sessions Judge, Sumit G. Joshi, delivered the verdict on Tuesday, concluding that the prosecution had established both the homicidal death and the accused’s involvement. Chavan was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs 5,000. The incident, which occurred on October 9, 2015, had sent shockwaves through the city due to its gruesome nature.
The Crime and Investigation
The murder took place outside Chavan’s residence in the Katraj area following a domestic dispute. Chavan, then 63 years old, allegedly attacked his wife with an axe, severing her head. He was subsequently seen walking approximately 500 meters on a busy road, carrying the axe and his wife’s severed head, before being apprehended by the police. Public prosecutor Prem Kumar Agarwal stated that Chavan suspected his wife’s character and believed she was having an extra-marital affair with their son-in-law. Evidence presented indicated that Chavan attacked his wife with an axe and dismembered her body. When confronted by the police, Chavan discarded the weapon and the severed head, which he had intended to dump in Katraj lake, and surrendered. Police found the victim’s mutilated body inside the house and discovered that Chavan’s daughter-in-law and her two minor children were locked inside.
Eyewitness Accounts and Evidence
The court’s decision was heavily influenced by the testimonies of several eyewitnesses, including neighbours who reported seeing Chavan assaulting his wife and dismembering her body. The victim’s daughter-in-law testified that she witnessed the assault and was confined within the house when she attempted to intervene. The court also considered Chavan’s actions after the murder, noting that he was observed walking on the road with the weapon and the severed head, which corroborated the prosecution’s case. CCTV footage, video recordings, and the seizure of blood-stained clothing further supported the evidence presented by the prosecution.
Legal Proceedings
During the trial, the prosecution presented a comprehensive case supported by multiple witnesses and forensic findings. The defence could not effectively counter the evidence presented, leading to the conviction. The court meticulously reviewed all evidence, including medical reports confirming the homicidal nature of the death and the extent of injuries sustained by the victim. The sentencing reflects the severity of the crime and the court’s commitment to upholding justice.
