A man died after allegedly setting himself on fire outside his wife’s residence in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri following a domestic dispute, police confirmed on Tuesday. The incident, which occurred on Monday, has led to the apprehension of the man’s wife and mother-in-law for questioning as investigations into the exact sequence of events unfold.
Incident Details and Police Response
According to police reports, a PCR call regarding a fire incident was received late Monday evening at the Mahendra Park police station, alerting authorities to a situation in the Jahangirpuri area. Responding officers rushed to the scene and discovered the man, identified as Deepansh Chaudhary, in a severely burnt condition. He was immediately transported to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial (BJRM) Hospital, where he was declared dead during treatment.
Background of Matrimonial Dispute
Preliminary inquiries by the police revealed that Chaudhary and his wife had been experiencing significant matrimonial disputes for some time. It was also disclosed that a complaint had previously been lodged at the Crime Against Women (CAW) Cell concerning their marital issues. On the day of the incident, after an altercation with his wife, Chaudhary allegedly threatened to end his life before proceeding to set himself ablaze outside her home.
Clarification on Rumors
Police have sought to clarify certain rumors that circulated in local media suggesting that the man’s wife and mother-in-law may have been involved in setting him on fire. Authorities have stated that initial investigations point towards self-immolation and that further inquiry is underway to ascertain all facts. Legal action will be taken based on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
The victim, Deepansh Chaudhary, was reportedly a 26-year-old cab driver. Neighbors alerted the police after witnessing the man engulfed in flames outside the residence late Monday night. Sources indicate that the couple had met the previous year, and the man had allegedly misrepresented his profession to the woman, claiming to be a government officer when he was, in fact, a cab driver. The woman had reportedly been hesitant to marry him upon discovering this discrepancy.
