Ken Paxton, the current Attorney General of Texas, has navigated a political career spanning over two decades, characterized by significant legal battles, impeachment proceedings, and a series of controversies alongside notable electoral victories.
The Chenab Times has learned that Paxton’s tenure has been a subject of intense scrutiny, beginning with indictments on felony securities fraud charges in 2015, shortly after he took office. These charges stemmed from allegations that he misled investors in a tech startup, Servergy Inc., without disclosing his commission. Despite these indictments, Paxton has consistently maintained his innocence, often attributing the legal challenges to politically motivated attacks.
In 2020, a significant development occurred when eight of Paxton’s top aides reported him to the FBI, alleging bribery and abuse of office. This led to a federal investigation and subsequent lawsuits filed by the former aides, who accused Paxton of violating the Texas Whistleblower Act. These whistleblowers were subsequently fired, escalating the legal turmoil. In April 2025, a judge ruled against Paxton in the whistleblower lawsuit, ordering a payout of $6.6 million to the fired attorneys, a sum to be paid by Texas taxpayers.
The culmination of these controversies led to Paxton’s impeachment by the Texas House of Representatives on May 27, 2023. The House approved 20 articles of impeachment, including charges of bribery, abuse of public trust, and unfitness for office. The impeachment proceedings centered heavily on allegations that Paxton had used his position to benefit a political donor and friend, Austin real estate developer Nate Paul. This action resulted in Paxton’s immediate suspension from office, pending a trial in the Texas Senate.
Following a two-week trial in September 2023, the Texas Senate acquitted Paxton of all 16 articles of impeachment for which he was tried. The vote fell short of the two-thirds majority required for conviction, leading to his reinstatement as Attorney General. Despite the acquittal, the impeachment trial intensified political divisions within Texas.
In parallel to the impeachment saga, Paxton’s securities fraud case, which began in 2015, saw a resolution in March 2024. After years of legal delays, Paxton reached a pretrial diversion agreement with special prosecutors. This agreement required him to complete 100 hours of community service, undertake 15 hours of legal ethics courses, and pay approximately $300,000 in restitution to victims. Crucially, the deal stipulated no admission of guilt, and upon fulfillment of the terms, the felony charges were dismissed in June 2025. Critics have described this resolution as a lenient outcome for serious financial crime allegations.
Beyond these high-profile cases, Paxton’s office has been actively involved in numerous legal actions, often positioning Texas as a challenger to federal policies. He has led multistate lawsuits against the Obama administration on issues ranging from immigration to environmental regulations. More recently, under his leadership, the Texas Attorney General’s office has initiated aggressive legal actions against major technology companies, including Meta, Netflix, and Discord, citing consumer protection, privacy violations, and the safeguarding of children online.
These actions against tech giants, filed in May 2026, focus on allegations of deceptive trade practices, improper data collection, and the exposure of minors to predators. These enforcement actions are part of a broader trend of states using existing and new legislation to regulate the technology sector.
Paxton’s career also includes earlier legal entanglements, such as a 2014 reprimand and fine from the Texas Securities Board for soliciting investment clients without proper registration, which he attributed to administrative oversight. His office has also been involved in high-profile investigations, including a probe into former President Donald Trump’s business dealings and claims of withholding records related to the January 6th Capitol events.
Throughout these various legal and political challenges, Ken Paxton has maintained a strong base of conservative support. His electoral successes, including re-elections in 2018 and 2022, underscore his enduring appeal among a significant segment of the Texas electorate, even as his tenure continues to be defined by a complex interplay of legal battles and political resilience.
