Iran Strikes Bahrain, Jordan in Retaliation for U.S. Attacks

Iran launched missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. bases in Bahrain and Jordan, as well as two tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, in retaliation for fresh U.S. strikes on southern Iran. The escalating exchanges threaten a significant return to widespread regional conflict and further complicate efforts to ensure freedom of navigation in critical waterways.

Bahrain reported intercepting several Iranian attacks, with explosions heard in its capital, Manama. The country accused Iran of targeting civilians. Jordan stated it intercepted four missiles launched from Iran, emphasizing that there were no casualties or material damage. These actions come after the U.S. military conducted a series of strikes across Iran, including in the port cities of Bushehr and Bandar Abbas, aimed at degrading Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the attacks on Bahrain and Jordan, stating that its forces targeted U.S. military facilities, including weapons depots, a satellite communications center, and accommodation buildings at Bahrain’s Juffair base. The IRGC also asserted that ballistic missiles struck U.S. positions at an air base in Jordan used for launching attacks against Iran, while also noting that Iran harbors no hostility towards Jordan or its people. Separately, Iran’s army claimed to have targeted a “hostile” U.S. vessel with cruise missiles and launched drone strikes on U.S. military facilities in Kuwait, hitting communications systems, fuel depots, and air defense systems.

The United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Defence reported that two tankers, the Mombasa and the Bahiya, were attacked by Iranian cruise missiles in the southern Strait of Hormuz. The attack resulted in the death of one Indian crew member and injuries to eight others. The UAE has threatened retaliation for these attacks.

The European Union’s Aviation Safety Agency issued a warning for airlines, advising them to avoid flying over the airspace of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE, as well as the Gulf of Oman, due to the unpredictable military developments creating risks to civil flights.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed completing its latest wave of strikes against Iran, describing the operation as targeting military facilities to degrade Iran’s capacity to attack commercial shipping. The U.S. military stated that its forces employed precision munitions against Iranian coastal defense systems, missile and drone sites, and maritime capabilities. The United States maintains a significant military presence in the Middle East, with over 50,000 service members deployed across the region.

Regional mediators have been working to de-escalate the situation and bring the United States and Iran back to the negotiating table. However, the ongoing cycle of attacks and retaliations poses a significant challenge to these diplomatic efforts. The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas supplies, and the heightened tensions have raised concerns about a potential global energy crisis.

The latest exchange marks a sharp escalation in hostilities, following a period of negotiations aimed at a permanent settlement to the conflict. The U.S. President had previously threatened severe consequences should Iran attempt any assassination, stating that numerous missiles were prepared and aimed at the Islamic Republic. Iran’s supreme leader had vowed revenge for a previous incident, though specific details were not immediately clear.
