India is actively modernising its military and possesses significant industrial and logistics capabilities to support advanced combat operations, according to remarks made by a high-ranking US defense official. The official highlighted India’s growing power and its role in maintaining a balance of power, particularly within the Indian Ocean region.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth shared these assessments during his participation at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. He emphasized that India’s advancements include the development of substantial industrial and logistical infrastructure, crucial for sustaining high-intensity military engagements. Furthermore, Hegseth noted a commitment from the United States to pursue co-production initiatives with India, aimed at enhancing mutual defense capabilities as America itself undergoes a global expansion of its defense manufacturing sector.
Speaking at the security summit, Hegseth also touched upon the broader defense landscape in the Asia-Pacific, which he described as the world’s most strategically consequential region. He asserted that the security framework of the area relies heavily on American military power and urged participating nations to prioritize their own defense investments. The official’s remarks come amidst a complex geopolitical environment marked by global tensions and ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Europe, as well as evolving strategic priorities in the Indo-Pacific.
Hegseth also discussed defense-related dialogues and cooperation with other key nations in the region, including Japan, South Korea, Australia, and members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). He articulated the United States’ position in navigating global challenges, stressing that while US-China relations have seen some improvement, no single nation, including China, should be allowed to exert hegemony or compromise the security of the United States and its allies.
The Shangri-La Dialogue, a prominent annual security forum, this year convened senior defense officials from 44 nations. The discussions provided a platform for leaders to address pressing security issues, regional challenges, and the future of defense cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. The event also served to underscore the United States’ engagement with its allies and partners in promoting stability and security in the region.
