Himachal Pradesh: Jai Ram Thakur Claims BJP Wave Following Local Polls

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh – Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur on Monday asserted that recent results from the Panchayati Raj and Urban Local Body elections in Himachal Pradesh indicate a significant public sentiment against the incumbent Congress government.

The Chenab Times has learned that Thakur claimed these election outcomes have exposed growing public resentment towards the Congress administration, attributing it to what he described as the Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s attempts to defer the polls due to an anticipated defeat.

In a statement released from Shimla, Thakur highlighted that despite alleged efforts to delay the elections and purported violations of the model code of conduct, candidates supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive mandate. He stated that the results reflect widespread dissatisfaction with the Congress government’s performance over its nearly four-year tenure, which he characterized as “misrule.”

The former Chief Minister pointed out that several senior Congress leaders, including the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, ministers, and party legislators, faced rejection in their respective electoral segments. Thakur interpreted the strong showing of BJP-backed candidates in gram panchayats, urban local bodies, and Zila Parishads as a clear indication of diminishing public support for the Congress. He suggested this trend positions the party for a potential defeat in the 2027 Assembly elections.

Thakur further criticized the ruling party, alleging that their victory in the 2022 Assembly elections was based on “false guarantees” that have not been fulfilled by the government even after three years in office. He contended that the electorate’s vote in the local body polls served as a direct response to these unkept promises.

Additionally, Thakur raised concerns regarding the government’s handling of the Chief Secretary appointment. He questioned the administration’s decision-making process in appointing a regular Chief Secretary, asking why the system was being “made a mockery of” under the guise of systemic change.

The local body elections, held across various districts of Himachal Pradesh, involved contests for positions in gram panchayats, block development councils, and urban local bodies, including municipalities and nagar panchayats. These elections are often seen as a barometer of public mood ahead of major state and national polls. The results have been closely watched, with political analysts examining the performance of both the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP in different regions of the hill state.

The Congress government, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, came to power in December 2022, ending the BJP’s five-year term. The party’s campaign was largely centered on a promise of restoring the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for government employees and other welfare measures. The opposition has consistently accused the government of failing to deliver on these promises and mismanaging the state’s finances.

The performance of BJP-backed candidates in these grassroots-level elections is being interpreted by the party as a validation of their stand against the state government. The BJP has been actively campaigning on issues such as inflation, unemployment, and the perceived failures of the Congress administration in implementing its agenda. The local elections provide a crucial platform for political parties to gauge their standing and mobilize their support base.

Political observers note that the outcome of these elections could have implications for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024, influencing campaign strategies and voter perceptions. The BJP’s strong performance in these polls will likely embolden the party as it prepares for the national electoral contest, while the Congress will need to address the concerns raised by the opposition and recalibrate its strategy to regain public trust.
