Security agencies have heightened their vigil and initiated a joint investigation following reports of suspicious drone-like objects being observed over the Meerut Cantonment area in Uttar Pradesh. Officials confirmed that information regarding the presence of camera-equipped drones flying over the cantonment was received on the evening of May 30. In response to the alert, combined teams of the Army and local police conducted extensive search operations and notified senior military and police authorities. The investigation included thorough searches in the vicinities of Sardhana Road, Kankerkhera, RVC, and Ganganagar areas. Authorities are also meticulously examining CCTV footage from the surrounding regions to gather more information.
Additional City Superintendent of Police, Vinayak Gopal Bhonsle, stated that the intelligence regarding the drone-like objects over the cantonment area was received through Army and local police channels on the evening of May 30. Taking the information seriously, specialized units, including the police surveillance team and social media cell, were tasked with investigating the matter. He further elaborated that a comprehensive search operation was conducted by a joint team comprising Army Police, local police, and district police personnel. A high-level meeting involving senior Army officers and officials from central agencies was also convened to ensure strict adherence to security-related standard operating procedures.
Bhonsle emphasized that the matter is being investigated in close coordination with specialized Army units. He also refuted media reports that suggested two drones had been shot down, stating that Army officials have denied any such incident and no confirmation has been received to date. Officials noted that operating drones without permission within a restricted military zone is a serious offense, and appropriate legal action will be pursued against any individuals found in violation.
The Meerut Cantonment is considered a highly sensitive and restricted area, with drone flights prohibited within a three-kilometer radius without explicit permission. Initial reports indicated the sighting of three drones, although security agencies are investigating the possibility that the actual number may have been higher. There is a concern among officials that the drones might have been equipped with night vision capabilities, leading to heightened surveillance and thorough checks of people and vehicles in the surrounding areas and along the routes.
This incident follows a period of heightened concern in western Uttar Pradesh regarding drone sightings, particularly in rural areas, which had led to increased night patrols and public awareness drives by the police. In July 2025, Meerut police had already initiated measures, including seminars with village heads and the establishment of a ‘drone register’ to track drone ownership, in response to earlier reports of suspected drone sightings. These efforts aimed to address rumors and identify potential mischief-makers while urging the public to report suspicious activities and refrain from spreading misinformation on social media. Authorities had warned of strict legal action against those found spreading rumors or attempting to disturb social harmony.
