The Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary, located in the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh, has achieved the distinction of becoming India’s 100th Ramsar site, a significant environmental designation announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Wetlands of International Importance
Ramsar sites are wetlands that have been identified as being of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty adopted in 1971 in the city of Ramsar, Iran. The convention’s mission is to promote the conservation and wise use of wetlands through national actions and international cooperation.
In a communication shared via the social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi expressed his pleasure at the designation, stating, “A century as far as Ramsar sites are concerned! Glad that the Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh has been designated as India’s 100th Ramsar site.” He further described the wetland as a habitat rich in avifaunal biodiversity, attracting a variety of migratory and resident bird species.
The Prime Minister emphasized that India’s dedication to safeguarding its natural environment, with a particular focus on wetlands, is demonstrably reflected in this achievement. He noted that efforts to conserve and revitalize wetlands have been intensified over the years through increased community involvement, the application of scientific knowledge and innovation, and various awareness initiatives. These endeavors, he added, are instrumental in preserving biodiversity, maintaining ecological balance, and fostering a more sustainable future for subsequent generations.
State Recognition and Conservation Efforts
The Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary, also commonly referred to as Surha Tal, marks the 13th Ramsar site to be recognized within Uttar Pradesh. This designation was officially communicated in a statement released from Lucknow.
During an environment day program, Uttar Pradesh Forest Minister Arun Kumar Saxena formally presented the certificate pertaining to this recognition to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on stage, as detailed in the official statement.
India has been a signatory to the Convention on Wetlands, the Ramsar Convention, since February 1, 1982. As a Contracting Party, the nation commits to implementing measures for the conservation and sustainable management of designated wetlands.
The designation of a wetland as a Ramsar site signifies an international commitment. Countries that are parties to the convention agree to establish and maintain a management framework for their designated wetlands, ensuring their ecological character is preserved and their benefits for humanity are maintained.
