Mumbai commuters travelling on the Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, can now enjoy mobile network connectivity throughout the underground sections. This development marks the end of a prolonged period where passengers experienced a network blackout during their subterranean journeys.
Phased Rollout of Mobile Services Underway
Mobile network services have begun to be activated across various stretches of the Mumbai Metro Line 3’s underground corridor. Passengers using Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) networks can now make calls, send messages, and access the internet while travelling through tunnels. Airtel services are currently available between Aarey JVLR and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), covering approximately 10 stations. Vodafone Idea users have network access from Aarey JVLR to Acharya Atre Chowk, spanning about 16 stations.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the activation of these services is being carried out in phases. Officials from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) have stated that coverage will gradually expand to encompass the entire corridor. The remaining stretch of the line, from Science Centre to Cuffe Parade, is still being equipped with the necessary telecom infrastructure, with connectivity expected in the coming weeks.
Resolving Long-Standing Connectivity Issues
The introduction of mobile connectivity addresses a significant pain point for commuters on Metro Line 3, which is Mumbai’s first fully underground metro line. Previously, passengers were largely disconnected once trains entered the underground sections, leading to numerous complaints. This issue stemmed from a prolonged dispute between the MMRC and telecom operators regarding the deployment of in-building solutions (IBS) infrastructure within the tunnels and stations.
The stalemate was resolved after the MMRC signed a joint agreement with Airtel, Jio, and Vi in May. Under this agreement, the telecom companies are responsible for deploying and operating the shared telecom infrastructure themselves for the next 25 years. This collaborative approach aims to ensure seamless voice and data services throughout the metro corridor.
Future Expansion and Other Services
While Airtel and Vi have initiated their services, work is also underway to integrate BSNL network connectivity. BSNL services are anticipated to become operational within the metro network in the next six months. The enhanced network coverage is expected to improve both the convenience and safety for the thousands of passengers who use Mumbai’s underground metro daily.
The 33.5-kilometre Mumbai Metro Line 3, stretching from Cuffe Parade to Aarey Colony, comprises 27 stations, with 26 of them being underground. The line has been operational in phases since October 2024, with the final stretch inaugurated in October 2025. The project, largely financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aims to significantly enhance Mumbai’s public transportation system by reducing road congestion and improving north-south connectivity.
