Jammu and Kashmir Scholar Receives International Grant for Endangered Fish Research

SRINAGAR: A doctoral candidate from the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) has been awarded a significant international research grant to study a critically endangered native fish species.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the 6,500 US dollar grant from the United States-based Wild Animal Initiative will support a project focused on the Kashmir Loach (Triplophysa kashmirensis), a fish endemic to the region’s waters.

The project, titled “Assessing Behavioural and Physiological Welfare Indicators for the Kashmir Loach (Triplophysa kashmirensis)”, has Misba Rehman as the lead applicant and Dr. Syed Talia Mushtaq serving as the Principal Investigator. The research aims to gather scientific data on the behavioural and physiological welfare indicators of the Kashmir Loach. This information is intended to inform and bolster science-based conservation and management strategies for the species, which is currently classified as critically endangered.

Professor Nazir Ahmad Ganai, the Vice-Chancellor of SKUAST-K, extended congratulations to the research team. He noted that the achievement underscores the growing international recognition of the research conducted at the university and expressed confidence that the grant will further reinforce SKUAST-K’s dedication to conducting impactful scientific research and promoting biodiversity conservation.

Professor Farooz Ahmad Bhat, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries, described the funding as a notable accomplishment. He highlighted that the project addresses a crucial yet relatively under-researched area concerning fish welfare and conservation.

Dr. Tasaduq Hussain Shah, Head of the Division of Fisheries Resource Management, commented on the international grant, stating that it validates the scientific merit and increasing relevance of the research undertaken by his division. He emphasized that such international recognition is vital for advancing conservation efforts.

Misba Rehman conveyed her gratitude for the support, indicating that the funding will be instrumental in facilitating innovative research.
