The Jalandhar Commissionerate Police have apprehended four individuals allegedly linked to a gang involved in extortion and firing incidents within the region. Authorities also recovered three sophisticated pistols and live ammunition from the arrested suspects, according to a statement from the Punjab Police on Saturday.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that preliminary investigations suggest the arrested men were operating under the direction of handlers based abroad. These handlers are believed to be orchestrating and facilitating multiple firing incidents that have occurred in both Jalandhar and Nawanshahr districts.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav stated on the social media platform X that the gang’s activities were primarily focused on extortion and carrying out acts of violence. The recent arrest represents a significant breakthrough for the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police in their efforts to dismantle this criminal network.
The arrested individuals are suspected of firing at the BNS Fashions showroom located in Santokhpura just last week. Reports indicate that the owner of the establishment, Lakshay Verma, had been subjected to demands for Rs 50 lakh from the gang.
Following the incident at the showroom, an First Information Report (FIR) was officially registered at the Bhargo Camp police station in Jalandhar. This legal action initiates the formal process of investigation and prosecution against the accused.
The police have indicated that further comprehensive investigations are currently underway. The objective is to thoroughly establish the backward and forward linkages of the entire criminal network. This includes identifying any other associates who may be involved in this racket and understanding the full scope of their operations.
The recovered firearms are being subjected to forensic analysis to determine if they have been used in any previous criminal incidents. Authorities are also working to trace the origin of the weapons and their supply chain, which could potentially lead to further arrests.
The involvement of foreign-based handlers points towards a potentially broader organized crime syndicate operating across borders. Law enforcement agencies are collaborating with national and international counterparts to gather intelligence on these handlers and their modus operandi.
The Jalandhar Commissionerate Police have a history of tackling organized crime, and this operation is seen as a testament to their persistent efforts in maintaining law and order. The focus now shifts to uncovering the full extent of the gang’s operations, including their financial transactions and communication networks.
The arrests are expected to bring a sense of relief to local businesses and residents who may have been living under the threat of such extortionist activities. The police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and have urged the public to report any suspicious activities or information that could aid in ongoing investigations.
The investigation is also exploring the possibility of links between this gang and other criminal elements operating in Punjab. The recovery of sophisticated pistols suggests a well-equipped and organized criminal enterprise.
The Jalandhar and Nawanshahr districts have been experiencing a rise in such incidents, prompting increased surveillance and police patrols. This recent bust is anticipated to disrupt the operations of similar gangs active in the region.
The Punjab Police’s proactive approach in curbing such criminal activities has been lauded by the public. The DGP’s statement highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and inter-agency cooperation in combating organized crime.
The focus of the ongoing investigation will be on building a strong case against the arrested individuals and their foreign-based handlers. This includes gathering substantial evidence and ensuring that justice is served through due legal process.
