Bengaluru police have arrested a caregiver in connection with alleged abuse and cruelty towards children at a daycare facility located within the Capgemini campus in the city’s Brookefield area. The arrest follows the surfacing of disturbing videos purportedly showing toddlers being subjected to physical and mental mistreatment.
Caregiver Arrested Amidst Allegations of Child Cruelty
The arrested caregiver has been identified as Vijayalakshmi. According to reports, she was seen in videos allegedly mistreating children at the ‘Little Buds Day Care’ center. Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against several caregivers, including Vijayalakshmi, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Juvenile Justice Act.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the complaint was lodged by Tilekesh Kumar, detailing instances of children being beaten, dragged, forcefully handled, confined in washrooms, and having water poured on them. The complaint also mentioned threats and intimidation used against the children.
Investigation Underway, More Arrests Likely
A special team, headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police, is actively investigating the case. Authorities are reviewing all available footage from the daycare center to establish the full extent of the alleged abuse. Police have indicated that further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.
The case came to light after purported videos of the alleged mistreatment surfaced on social media platforms, sparking widespread outrage. In response to the incident, Capgemini, the IT services company whose campus houses the daycare, has temporarily closed the facility as a precautionary measure. The company has stated its full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
Broader Review of Daycare Facilities Announced
In light of the incident, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh announced a review of all daycare centers in the city, including those operated within corporate campuses. This review aims to ensure compliance with established norms and safety standards for childcare facilities. The Karnataka government has also vowed a zero-tolerance approach to such incidents, with the Home Minister emphasizing the need for strict adherence to daycare operational guidelines.
The alleged abuse reportedly involved extreme measures such as forcing children into washing machine drums, making them sit on western-style toilets, spraying water into their mouths, and locking them in bathrooms. The videos, which circulated widely, showed children crying and being subjected to physical abuse and torture by the caregivers.
The HAL police station registered the FIR based on a complaint that cited incidents occurring on June 25. The complaint detailed allegations of physical and mental abuse by the crèche staff, including the in-charge and caregivers.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to verify the authenticity of the videos and identify all affected children. The focus remains on ensuring accountability and preventing similar incidents in the future, reinforcing the need for stringent monitoring and regulation of childcare facilities across the city.
