SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has called for the immediate announcement of a comprehensive rehabilitation package for families impacted by recent flash floods in Thathri, Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. She also advocated for the development of a long-term disaster mitigation strategy for the entire Chenab Valley region.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Ms. Mufti expressed significant concern regarding the extensive damage to residential houses, commercial establishments, vehicles, and crucial public infrastructure. She emphasized the urgent need for both immediate relief and sustained rehabilitation support for the affected families.
The PDP president demanded a thorough, scientific assessment of the losses incurred by the flood victims. She specifically sought adequate compensation for damaged residential properties, commercial spaces, vehicles, agricultural land, and other private assets. Furthermore, Ms. Mufti called for financial assistance to be provided to traders and small business owners whose livelihoods have been adversely affected by the natural disaster.
Ms. Mufti also urged the Jammu and Kashmir administration to expedite the restoration of essential services. This includes the vital National Highway, damaged local roads, power supply, and drinking water facilities in the flood-affected areas. The prompt restoration of these services is crucial for the normalization of life and economic activity in the region.
Highlighting the recurring nature of such calamities in the Chenab Valley, Ms. Mufti pointed out that the region has repeatedly faced flash floods, landslides, and other weather-related incidents. This recurring pattern underscores the critical need for a permanent and effective disaster management strategy, she stated.
The former Chief Minister advocated for the implementation of a comprehensive disaster resilience plan specifically tailored for the Chenab region. Such a plan, she suggested, should incorporate robust flood protection infrastructure, effective river training works, the construction of retaining walls, scientific slope stabilization measures, and the enhancement of drainage systems. Additionally, she stressed the importance of installing modern early warning mechanisms in vulnerable areas to provide timely alerts during impending disasters.
Ms. Mufti appealed to the authorities to ensure a transparent process for the assessment of damages and the subsequent distribution of relief. This transparency, she believes, will guarantee that all genuinely affected families receive the necessary assistance without any undue delay or procedural impediments.
