VIJAYAWADA: Rayanapadu Railway Station, a key transit point on the Grand Trunk Route, is poised for its grand inauguration on July 17, 2026, after undergoing a comprehensive redevelopment worth over ₹35 crore under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The upgraded facility is expected to significantly alleviate congestion at Vijayawada Junction, one of South India’s busiest railway hubs. The redevelopment project, driven by the efforts of Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni), has transformed the station into a modern passenger facility.
Modern Amenities and Infrastructure Enhancements
The inauguration ceremony will see Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually dedicate the station to the nation, alongside several other redeveloped railway stations across the country. Railway authorities have finalized all arrangements for the inauguration and the subsequent commencement of passenger services. The station now boasts upgraded platforms, spacious waiting halls, modern booking counters, a well-equipped station master’s office, and reliable safe drinking water facilities. The surrounding premises have been enhanced with landscaped gardens and a compound wall, contributing to a more pleasant environment for passengers. The renovated station building features a contemporary façade, improved interiors, energy-efficient lighting systems, and incorporates artwork inspired by the famed Kondapalli toys, reflecting local cultural heritage. To ensure enhanced accessibility and convenience, the station is equipped with passenger-friendly amenities such as ramps, tactile tiles for the visually impaired, ample seating areas, and upgraded foot overbridges connecting its three platforms. Significant investment has been channeled into specific enhancements, with ₹5.77 crore allocated for air-conditioned waiting halls, modular toilets, and dedicated facilities for Divyangjan passengers. Platform No. 1 has been notably extended to 670 meters with a width of eight meters, and modern platform shelters have been constructed at a cost of ₹13.33 crore, including a 340-meter shelter on Platform No. 1 to provide protection from the elements. Furthermore, a new foot overbridge and two modern lifts, constructed at an expenditure of ₹5.77 crore, further bolster cross-platform connectivity.
Strategic Importance and Future Prospects
Rayanapadu Railway Station, situated approximately 9 kilometers from Vijayawada Junction, plays a crucial role as a bypass station on the strategic Chennai–Balharshah–Nagpur–New Delhi corridor. Its redevelopment is aimed at easing the operational burden on Vijayawada Junction and facilitating smoother train movement. Currently, around 12 trains, including express services, pass through Rayanapadu daily, with several scheduled to halt at the station. Officials anticipate an increase in train stoppages and, consequently, passenger traffic in the future, further underscoring the station’s growing importance in the region’s railway network. The station’s transformation is part of the broader Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, a nationwide initiative by Indian Railways to modernize railway infrastructure, improve passenger amenities, and foster regional economic development. This scheme has seen the redevelopment of 53 stations in Andhra Pradesh, with a total investment of approximately ₹2,611 crore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously laid the foundation stones for many of these projects in August 2023 and February 2024, accelerating their implementation.
The efforts by MP Kesineni Sivanath have been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition, with a steadfast focus on enhancing passenger comfort and safety. The upgraded Rayanapadu station is set to become a vital node in the South Central Railway’s network, improving connectivity and passenger experience for a significant number of travelers.
