Jammu and Kashmir: Congress Joins NC Protest Call for Statehood Restoration

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Congress has announced its support for the National Conference’s upcoming protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, aimed at demanding the restoration of the region’s statehood. The party asserted that the issue transcends political affiliations and is a matter of public concern.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Ghulam Ahmad Mir, AICC General Secretary and Jammu and Kashmir Congress in-charge, stated that his party would participate in the demonstration scheduled for July 20. Mir reiterated the Congress’s consistent opposition to the decisions implemented on August 5, 2019, and their ongoing advocacy for the reinstatement of Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional rights and statehood across various platforms.

Mir further elaborated that the Congress had previously declined ministerial opportunities, believing the electorate’s mandate was focused on regaining statehood and empowering the elected government. He questioned the utility of holding ministerial positions without substantive powers, underscoring the party’s principled stand.

Welcoming the National Conference’s initiative, Mir appealed to all political factions to set aside their differences and converge for the common cause. He emphasized the importance of unity and a collective voice in pursuing the restoration of statehood, cautioning against personal egos hindering progress on this crucial issue.

The Congress leader also voiced solidarity with the peaceful agitation led by Ladakh-based activist Sonam Wangchuk. Mir commended the people of Ladakh for pursuing their demands through democratic means and without resorting to violence, affirming support for anyone advocating for public welfare peacefully.

In preparation for the national-level demonstration, the Jammu and Kashmir Congress is set to organize a significant program titled “Hamari Riyasat, Hamara Haq” (Our State, Our Right) in Jammu on July 19. This event is expected to draw participation from party workers and citizens from across the Union Territory. Subsequently, selected party representatives will join the Jantar Mantar protest in the national capital on July 20.
