Two master weavers from Kanihama, located in the Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, have been recognized with the prestigious National Handloom Award for their exceptional contributions to the traditional Kani weaving craft.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Manzoor Ahmad Hajam and Fayaz Ahmad Wani received the honour from President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony in New Delhi, coinciding with National Handloom Day. The award acknowledged their joint submission, a meticulously crafted ‘Chand-Daar Kani Shawl’.
The Handicrafts and Handloom Department of Kashmir extended its congratulations to the weavers, stating that this national recognition underscores their dedication to preserving and promoting the intricate Kani weaving technique. This ancient craft, known for its complexity and artistry, is a significant part of the region’s cultural heritage.
According to a statement released by the department, the award-winning shawl exemplifies a rare Kani weaving method that relies on coded ‘Talim’ scripts to ensure precision in its execution. The intricate design of the shawl features approximately 20 different hues, meticulously blended to recreate the aesthetic of an antique masterpiece, showcasing the weavers’ profound skill and dedication to traditional artistry.
The National Handloom Award includes a citation and a cash prize of Rs 2.5 lakh. Officials from the department highlighted that this recognition would significantly boost the profile of Kani weaving within the broader crafts sector. They expressed optimism that such accolades could stimulate new business opportunities and enhance the marketability of this high-value traditional craft.
The department further emphasized that the remarkable craftsmanship displayed by Hajam and Wani has been instrumental in safeguarding a centuries-old tradition, bringing it wider recognition on a national platform. Their achievement is expected to serve as an inspiration to other artisans and the wider craft community, encouraging the continuation and evolution of traditional weaving practices in the region.
