New Delhi is set to host key meetings of the BRICS Environment Working Group (EWG) and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development starting Monday, culminating in the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting on Tuesday.
The Chenab Times has learned that these significant environmental discussions will take place at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, under the theme of India’s BRICS Chairship for 2026: ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’. The series of meetings aims to foster collaboration and address pressing environmental priorities among the member nations.
The BRICS Environment Working Group, established in 2015 during the first BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting in Moscow, serves as a crucial platform for member countries to tackle fundamental environmental challenges. Its mandate includes the exchange of experiences, sharing of best practices, and strengthening collective action on environmental issues.
More recently, the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development was formed in 2024. This group functions as a dedicated mechanism for cooperation specifically on climate change-related matters among BRICS member countries, reflecting a growing emphasis on this global concern.
The upcoming Environment Ministers’ Meeting is expected to convene ministers, senior officials, policymakers, and experts from all BRICS nations. The agenda includes substantive discussions focused on forging consensus and enhancing environmental cooperation across the bloc. A statement from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change indicated that these dialogues are vital for advancing shared environmental goals.
Prior to the ministerial gathering, the Senior Officers’ Meeting will feature an inaugural session followed by in-depth deliberations. These discussions will centre on the key priorities for both the BRICS EWG and the Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development. Key areas of focus are anticipated to include the promotion of sustainable lifestyles, initiatives for afforestation, effective forest fire management strategies, and bolstering disaster resilience among member states.
During the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting, participants will engage in discussions on an outcome document that is expected to be adopted. The meeting will also incorporate thematic discussions that will highlight the unified commitment of the BRICS countries towards environmental stewardship and the pursuit of sustainable development pathways. The collaborative nature of these meetings underscores the importance BRICS nations place on addressing global environmental challenges collectively.
