LUDHIANA: A 39-year-old man was shot dead and his friend sustained a bullet injury to the arm following a brief altercation near the Clock Tower in Ludhiana late Monday night. The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Kotwali police station.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the deceased has been identified as Harminder Singh, popularly known as Sonu, a resident of Ashok Nagar. His injured companion, Sanju, is currently receiving medical attention at a local hospital.
According to initial reports, Sonu was returning home after attending a birthday party. Upon reaching the local bus stand adjacent to the Clock Tower, he engaged in a verbal dispute with a group of unidentified individuals. The altercation escalated rapidly, and one of the accused allegedly produced a firearm and opened fire. Sonu was struck by bullets and transported to the hospital in critical condition, where medical professionals pronounced him dead.
Sonu’s wife, Jyoti, stated that her husband had left home around 9 p.m. on Monday night along with his friend Sanju, informing the family they were attending a friend’s birthday celebration. Around 1 a.m., the family received a distressing phone call informing them of the shooting near the Clock Tower. They rushed to the hospital, only to be informed of Sonu’s demise.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the dispute originated over a minor issue concerning the passage of a vehicle. A disagreement arose between Sonu and Sanju on one side, and the group of youths on the other. The argument quickly devolved into violence, with the assailants reportedly drawing illegal weapons in a fit of anger and firing indiscriminately at Sonu and Sanju.
Sonu was hit by a bullet in the throat, while Sanju was injured in his arm. Following the shooting, the assailants fled the scene in their car. Sonu, a married man, is survived by his wife Jyoti and their two young sons, aged eight years and 21 months.
Police officials have initiated a thorough examination of CCTV footage from all cameras installed at the incident site and on surrounding roads. The objective is to identify the attackers’ vehicle and apprehend the individuals involved. The post-mortem examination of the deceased is being conducted at the Civil Hospital. A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to murder and the Arms Act, and law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing leads to arrest them.
