Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti has questioned Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s approach regarding his upcoming meeting with the United States Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor. Mufti criticized Abdullah for publicly outlining what he intended to discuss and what he would refrain from discussing with the envoy before the meeting had even taken place.
Mufti Questions Abdullah’s Pre-emptive Statements
Iltija Mufti took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express her reservations. “Am yet to see an Indian CM so apologetic about a simple meeting with the US Ambassador that he feels the need to announce beforehand what he will & won’t discuss,” she posted. Mufti further questioned the necessity of such public pre-emptive defensiveness, stating, “A meeting is a meeting. Why the public pre-emptive defensiveness?” Her remarks came after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated that while he would discuss the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir with Ambassador Gor, he would not raise internal issues or seek solutions from Washington. Abdullah had emphasized that the resolution of Jammu and Kashmir’s issues lay with the central government, not with foreign powers, and that it was not his habit to complain about his country to foreign diplomats.
Abdullah Affirms Centre’s Role in Resolution
Omar Abdullah, speaking to reporters in Srinagar, had clarified his position ahead of the meeting. “It is after a very long time that a US ambassador is visiting Jammu and Kashmir. For me personally, it has been a long time since I met any American ambassador. Let him come; we will sit and talk,” he had said. Abdullah further elaborated that he would prefer to listen to the ambassador during their interaction. He reiterated that the issues facing Jammu and Kashmir have no direct bearing on the US, as the resolution would not come from Washington, D.C., but from the Indian central government. “It has never been my habit to lodge complaints about my country to an ambassador of another country. The resolution to our issues will not come from Washington; the resolution to our problems lies with our central government,” Abdullah stated. He added that he would certainly discuss Jammu and Kashmir’s “current situation” with Ambassador Gor but would neither complain nor seek solutions to grievances from the visiting envoy.
Context of Diplomatic Engagement
The meeting between Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Ambassador Sergio Gor is significant as it marks a notable diplomatic engagement in Jammu and Kashmir after a considerable period. Ambassador Gor, who also serves as the US Special Envoy for South Asia and Central Asia, was scheduled to arrive in Srinagar for his maiden visit to the region after assuming office. His visit comes at a time when regional political parties have been vocal about issues such as special status, constitutional guarantees, and the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. The visit also follows recent high-level interactions between Ambassador Gor and Union Home Minister Amit Shah concerning issues including counter-terrorism and counter-narcotics. This engagement is seen as an indication of renewed focus on the region by the United States.
Ambassador Gor’s itinerary included meetings in Srinagar before a potential trip to Ladakh. This visit by a top US diplomat to Jammu and Kashmir is considered significant, particularly as it is the first such visit since the region was reorganized as a Union Territory in 2019.
