Punjab: Key Accused in Social Media Influencer Murder Case Gets Medical Check-up

Amritpal Singh Mehron, a key accused in the murder of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, also known as Kamal Kaur Bhabhi, was taken from Bathinda Central Jail to a local civil hospital for a medical examination on Wednesday. The examination, which included an ultrasound, was conducted under tight security measures before he was returned to custody.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that Mehron’s legal counsel, Manpreet Singh Brar, had previously filed an application in court requesting permission for his client to receive medical treatment. The defense stated that Amritpal has kidney stones in both organs.

Earlier, on June 20, Amritpal was transported to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a medical evaluation. His lawyer indicated that Amritpal has stones measuring approximately 8 mm and 9 mm in both kidneys, and doctors had prescribed a nine-day course of medication.

Currently, four individuals are in judicial custody in connection with the case. These include Amritpal and Jaspreet, both residents of Mehron village in Moga district, and Nimratjit Singh and Ranjit Singh, residents of Tarn Taran district. All four are identified as Nihangs. Amritpal Singh Mehron was extradited from the United Arab Emirates and brought back to India on April 10 of this year.

A fifth accused in the case has been identified as Shamsher Singh, also known as Shera, from Jhabal village in Tarn Taran district. He is reportedly evading arrest.

The badly decomposed body of 36-year-old Kamal, a resident of Ludhiana who belonged to a family of migrant workers, was discovered on the night of June 11 last year. The body was found in the rear seat of a car parked outside Adesh University, near Bhucho Kalan village along the Bathinda-Chandigarh highway, following complaints from locals about a foul odor.

Law enforcement officials have stated that the murder was a consequence of what they termed “moral policing.” According to police accounts, Amritpal, who was acquainted with Kamal, had previously warned her against posting what he considered “indecent” videos on social media platforms. The police claim that Amritpal and his associates subsequently conspired and allegedly strangled her to death as a punitive measure.
