Srinagar, August 24: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has publicly challenged party MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi to resign from the Lok Sabha and seek a fresh mandate if he believes his electoral success was due to personal support rather than party backing.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Abdullah’s remarks came in response to recent public statements made by Mehdi. Abdullah stated that while Mehdi is at liberty to raise issues such as the restoration of Article 370 in Parliament, he questioned the MP’s approach to advocating for it.
Abdullah asserted that party members are expected to align with organizational decisions, especially during electoral contests. He cited the example of the Budgam polls to emphasize the importance of party discipline, adding that party workers could not be expected to campaign against an officially nominated candidate.
Addressing speculation about internal discord within the National Conference, Abdullah acknowledged that disagreements are a natural part of political organizations and should not necessarily be interpreted as a challenge to leadership. He also reiterated his stance on the distinct roles of the party and the government, stating that as NC president, he aims to avoid undue interference in administrative matters.
Recalling the historical sacrifices of National Conference leaders and workers, Abdullah highlighted the organization’s enduring strength, attributing it to the dedication of its grassroots cadre. When questioned about Mehdi’s political trajectory, Abdullah advised the MP to seek guidance from the Quran, while expressing his view that Mehdi is currently taking an incorrect path.
