Jammu and Kashmir Police Foils Cattle Smuggling in Kathua, Seizes Trucks

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday reported the successful thwarting of three separate bovine smuggling attempts in Kathua district, leading to the rescue of 49 cattle and the seizure of three trucks believed to be involved in the illegal transportation. The alleged smugglers managed to evade capture in all incidents.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the intercepted trucks were reportedly en route from Punjab. The police initiated action during routine naka checks at multiple locations across the district.

In the first instance, a police team deployed at Lakhanpur on Thursday intercepted a truck. A thorough check revealed 17 cattle being transported under inhumane conditions. Authorities rescued the animals and seized the vehicle. The driver reportedly fled the scene before being apprehended. Following this, a case was registered at Lakhanpur Police Station under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Two further incidents occurred on Wednesday. Police personnel intercepted two trucks in the Hatli Morh and Sawan Chak areas of Kathua. In both situations, drivers reportedly stopped their vehicles shortly before reaching the police checkpoints and escaped on foot. A search of the trucks led to the rescue of 17 cattle from one vehicle and 15 from the other. Both trucks were subsequently seized, and cases were registered at Police Station Kathua for the incidents.

The ongoing investigation aims to identify and apprehend the individuals involved in the alleged cattle smuggling operations. The recovered cattle were taken into protective custody, and authorities are continuing their efforts to combat such illegal activities in the region.
