SRINAGAR: A delegation of protesting intern doctors in Jammu and Kashmir has rejected the government’s proposal of a one-month deadline to address their demands concerning stipends, vowing to continue their ongoing strike. The decision was made following a meeting with the Union Territory’s Health Minister and a Chief Minister’s Advisor.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the intern doctors, represented by a delegation, met with Health Minister Sakina Itoo and a Chief Minister’s Advisor on Sunday to present their long-standing grievances. During the deliberations, Minister Itoo reportedly requested a month’s time from the interns to resolve the issues surrounding their stipends. However, the intern doctors collectively decided against accepting this timeframe, emphasizing their prolonged wait and the need for immediate and concrete action.
Dr. Mohammad Momin Khan, who is the Incharge of the All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) and was part of the delegation, conveyed the interns’ stance. He stated that the interns have already endured a significant waiting period and are seeking a clear and tangible commitment from the government, rather than mere assurances. Dr. Khan questioned the necessity of further delay if the matter could be resolved promptly, stressing the demand for clarity on the actual resolution timeline.
The protesting intern doctors have made it clear that they will only call off their strike upon receiving a formal written order from the government that officially confirms the proposed increase in their stipends. This insistence on a written directive underscores their concern about potential unfulfilled promises and their desire for official documentation to validate any agreement.
Several leaders from AIMSA were present during the crucial meeting, including Dr. Tasaduk, Dr. Akib, Dr. Shahnawaz, Dr. Faraz, and Dr. Zamin. Dr. Mohammad Momin Khan played a pivotal role in supporting and coordinating the efforts of the intern doctors throughout their protest and subsequent negotiations.
