A passenger train in Poland struck a large truck that became stuck on the railway tracks as crossing barriers were descending, resulting in significant disruptions and damage but no passenger injuries.
The incident occurred on September 3, 2026, near Gdańsk, Poland, when the truck driver entered the crossing as the barriers began to lower. The truck became trapped between the barriers, and despite attempts to free it and signals from onlookers to break through, the vehicle remained on the tracks. A passenger train, traveling from Gdynia to Zielona Góra with approximately 250 to 300 people on board, subsequently collided with the truck’s trailer.
Security camera footage captured the dramatic moment of impact, showing the train plowing through the trailer and sending debris flying. Fortunately, the truck driver managed to exit the vehicle before the collision, and no passengers on the train sustained injuries. However, the train driver was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation.
Polish Railway Lines (PKP PLK) released the surveillance footage, emphasizing the importance of driver awareness at railway crossings. Authorities advised that if a vehicle becomes stuck at a crossing with an approaching train, drivers should break through the barrier and move off the tracks immediately. They also highlighted that trains have priority at all crossings and possess a significant braking distance, sometimes up to 800 meters, meaning a train may not be able to stop in time even if an obstacle is spotted.
The accident caused substantial disruption to rail traffic in the region. A total of 279 trains were delayed, accumulating over 17,500 minutes of combined delay. Additionally, 30 services were canceled on parts of the route, and 45 were diverted. The cost of repairing the damaged infrastructure, including the locomotive and crossing equipment, was estimated at approximately 140,000 Polish zlotys. PKP PLK indicated plans to seek compensation for these costs from the individual deemed responsible for the accident.
The 42-year-old truck driver, identified as a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was subsequently charged with creating an immediate risk of disaster in land transport. He reportedly pleaded not guilty and has provided testimony. The driver faces a potential prison sentence of up to three years.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with authorities reviewing the circumstances that led the truck driver to enter the crossing as the barriers were descending and to become trapped on the tracks.
