In the aftermath of devastating floods that swept through Nepal, DNA testing has emerged as a critical tool for authorities attempting to identify hundreds of recovered bodies and for families desperately searching for loved ones lost in the disaster.
Families Seek Closure Amidst Devastation
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the search for missing individuals continues weeks after the catastrophic floods. Amrit Diyali’s experience highlights the profound emotional toll. He observed a human hand washed downstream by floodwaters, its appearance eerily similar to that of his younger brother, Raj Kumar, who vanished along with his wife and four-year-old son. The discovery, relayed by his nephew who found the hand, has presented Diyali with a grim mixture of hope and dread, as a DNA test is now their sole recourse to determine if the remains belong to his brother.
This personal struggle mirrors a broader challenge confronting Nepal. Flash floods, precipitated by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, unleashed torrents that devastated towns and villages across northern and central Nepal. The Bhotekoshi River, a conduit for the destructive flow originating from the Himalayan border region, submerged homes, vehicles, roads, and bridges, while also inflicting damage on crucial hydropower projects. The disaster has claimed over 1,300 lives, with approximately 5,000 individuals still unaccounted for.
Forensic Efforts Underway to Identify the Deceased
Nepalese authorities have collected 2,272 DNA samples, comprising 1,260 from recovered bodies and 1,012 from relatives of the missing. This extensive collection is part of an ongoing effort to establish the identities of those who perished. According to reports, 1,030 bodies have already been interred following DNA sample collection and completion of other identification protocols. These include 222 female bodies, 355 male bodies, and 453 whose sex could not be determined from the remains.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority of Nepal has reported that only 96 bodies have been successfully identified and returned to their families. The process of identifying the deceased has become exceedingly difficult. Many bodies recovered downstream have been severely damaged, decomposed, or found only in fragmented pieces, rendering identification through facial features, clothing, or personal effects nearly impossible, according to officials.
Forensic experts emphasize that prolonged submersion in water, combined with exposure to mud and debris, can obliterate distinguishing characteristics. In cases where remains are fragmented or commingled, DNA testing becomes indispensable. However, this is a painstaking process requiring comparative samples from both the recovered remains and biological relatives.
Families Navigate Uncertainty and Perform Final Rites
While fingerprints and dental records can also aid in identification, their utility is contingent on the condition of the remains and the availability of corresponding records. For families like the Diyalis, the imperative for identification transcends a mere forensic procedure; it represents the crucial step towards ending agonizing uncertainty and enabling them to perform the final rites for their lost loved ones.
Raj Kumar, 33, his 30-year-old wife Shriti, and their four-year-old son Siraj were residing in Syaphrubesi in the Rasuwa district when the Bhotekoshi flood struck. Relatives undertook extensive searches along the river, extending as far as Chitwan and Nawalpur, meticulously examining the terrain in the hope of a living discovery. When these efforts yielded no survivors, the focus shifted to locating their bodies.
Five days post-flood, Raj Kumar’s nephew discovered the hand in Nawalpur. A sample from this discovered part was dispatched to the National Forensic Science Laboratory in Kathmandu for DNA testing. Diyali has stated that this sample is the 182nd in line for processing. “We have stopped hoping for anything else,” he remarked, adding, “Even if that hand turns out to be my brother’s, at least we would know for sure.”
To streamline the process for affected families, the Nepal Police has established a DNA sample collection center in Bidur, Nuwakot. This initiative allows relatives of missing persons to submit samples without the necessity of traveling to Kathmandu. Damodar Poudel, Deputy Inspector General of the Nepal Police Hospital, noted that samples from immediate blood relatives, such as parents, children, and siblings, are particularly valuable for comparison with DNA extracted from unidentified remains.
Authorities have also made information regarding 1,270 unidentified bodies available on the Nepal Police website, providing a resource for families to check if their missing relatives are among the recovered. The ongoing efforts underscore the complex and sensitive nature of disaster recovery and the indispensable role of modern forensic science in providing answers and closure to grieving families.
