Himachal Pradesh has successfully completed the first phase of digitising approximately 1.7 million pages of rare and valuable historical records housed in the State Archives. This significant undertaking aims to ensure the long-term preservation of the state’s documentary heritage and enhance accessibility for researchers, historians, academics, and the general public.
Digitisation Initiative Safeguards State’s Historical Treasures
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the State Archives holds over 30,000 historical documents dating back to 1807. These include rare books, gazetteers, settlement reports, manuscripts, and other critical documents that are frequently consulted by scholars and researchers from within Himachal Pradesh, across India, and internationally. The digitisation project is expected to safeguard these invaluable materials from physical deterioration and ensure their availability for future generations.
The state is also actively participating in a National Manuscript Survey, supported by the Union Ministry of Culture under the Gyan Bharatam Mission. This survey focuses on identifying, documenting, and cataloguing rare and ancient manuscripts found within Himachal Pradesh. Manuscripts identified through this survey are subsequently digitised by a Cluster Centre located at the Himachal State Museum in Shimla, with digital copies being securely stored within the State Archives.
The Himachal Pradesh government plans to develop a modern Digital Archives Portal in collaboration with the Information Technology Department. This portal will host a fully searchable digital database of the digitised records. The responsibility for hosting, management, maintenance, and future upgrades of this database will be transferred to the IT Department. This digital platform is anticipated to significantly broaden and simplify online access to Himachal Pradesh’s historical records, thereby facilitating research, academic pursuits, documentation, and the dissemination of historical knowledge.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri highlighted the importance of this initiative in preserving the state’s rich historical and cultural heritage.
