New Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 23.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday morning, a slight increase from the previous day and marginally above the normal temperature for this time of the year. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the temperature at the Safdarjung base weather station remained consistent with Friday’s reading. However, other weather stations across the city registered lower minimum temperatures, with the Ridge at 20.4°C, Lodhi Road at 22.4°C, Palam at 22.6°C, and Ayanagar at 22.8°C, according to observations made at 8:30 AM.
Air Quality Remains in Moderate Category
Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 171 on Saturday morning, classifying it as ‘moderate’. The primary pollutant contributing to this reading was PM10. An AQI between 101 and 200 falls under the moderate category, indicating that air quality is acceptable, though sensitive individuals may experience some discomfort. The air quality had previously shown a deteriorating trend, with the AQI recorded at 173 on Friday, an increase from 166 the day before.
Weather Forecast for the Coming Week
The weather in Delhi is expected to remain largely dry for the next few days. However, rainfall activity is anticipated to increase from October 6th. The IMD has forecast isolated to scattered rain over Delhi, Haryana, and Chandigarh from October 6th to 8th, influenced by a western disturbance affecting northwest India. Experts suggest that due to consecutive western disturbances, the rain spell might extend to October 9th and 10th. Temperatures are predicted to stay in the low to mid-30s Celsius before this period of increased rainfall, according to the IMD’s medium-range forecast.
Regional Weather Patterns
Similar weather patterns are being observed in surrounding regions. Haryana and Chandigarh are also bracing for potential rainfall from October 6th to 8th. The outlook for the coming days in these areas indicates a possibility of dry weather initially, followed by the expected increase in precipitation. Maximum temperatures are generally expected to remain in the low to mid-30s Celsius across the National Capital Region (NCR) and nearby states before the anticipated rain.
The minimum temperature across various Delhi weather stations indicates localized microclimate variations within the city. While Safdarjung recorded 23.2°C, the Ridge experienced a cooler morning at 20.4°C, highlighting the diverse thermal conditions present within the capital. The IMD continues to monitor these conditions closely, providing forecasts to help residents plan their activities.
The ‘moderate’ air quality status suggests that while the air is not acutely harmful, vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions, should exercise caution. Steps such as limiting prolonged outdoor exertion are advisable. The sustained presence of PM10 as a prominent pollutant warrants attention, as it can affect respiratory health with prolonged exposure.
The forecast of increased rainfall from October 6th onwards offers a potential respite from the current air quality levels. Rain typically helps in settling dust particles and pollutants in the atmosphere, thereby improving air quality. However, the intensity and duration of this rainfall will determine its overall impact on the AQI.
