Punjab: Three Booked in Rs 37.60 Lakh Visa Fraud Case in Phillaur

The Punjab Police have registered a case against three individuals for allegedly defrauding a woman of ₹37.60 lakh under the guise of facilitating her son and daughter-in-law’s travel to England. The case follows a thorough inquiry into a complaint filed by the victim.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the complainant, identified as Manju, a resident of Raipur Araian village falling under the Phillaur police station, lodged a complaint alleging she was duped of a substantial sum. The fraudulent promise was made in 2024, with the accused assuring her of sending her son and daughter-in-law abroad.

Those named in the First Information Report (FIR) include Amandeep Sabharwal and his wife Reena, both residents of Chuhki village near Noormahal. Also implicated is Ruby, another resident of Chuhki village, and Mani Gill, who resides in Nakodar. The accused allegedly exploited the victim’s desire to have her family members settle in England.

The investigation into Manju’s complaint revealed a pattern of deception, where the accused allegedly collected the large sum of money without taking any concrete steps towards securing the visas or travel arrangements. The victim reportedly approached the police after realizing the fraudulent nature of the promises and the substantial financial loss incurred.

The registration of the FIR marks a significant step in the legal proceedings, and further investigations are underway to ascertain the full extent of the fraud and to recover the defrauded amount. The police are expected to initiate a search for the accused and gather additional evidence. This incident highlights the persistent vulnerability of individuals seeking overseas opportunities to fraudulent schemes, often involving significant financial commitments.

Visa fraud cases, where individuals and syndicates prey on the aspirations of those looking to emigrate for better prospects, continue to be a concern. These schemes often involve fabricated job offers, misleading promises of immigration pathways, and demands for substantial upfront payments. Law enforcement agencies across various states have been actively working to curb such activities, urging the public to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of travel agents and agencies before making any financial transactions.

The Phillaur police are currently gathering evidence, including financial transaction records and any communication between the victim and the accused, to build a strong case. Legal experts emphasize the importance of due diligence, including checking the registration and credentials of overseas employment promoters and visa consultants. Authorities have often advised the public to be wary of offers that seem too good to be true or that involve large upfront payments without clear contractual agreements and verifiable documentation.

The amount of ₹37.60 lakh represents a significant financial blow to the victim, underscoring the severity of the alleged crime. The police are committed to ensuring that justice is served and that such fraudulent activities are brought to a halt. The investigation aims to dismantle any potential network involved in facilitating these scams and to prevent future victims from falling prey to similar deceitful practices. The outcome of this investigation is anticipated to provide relief to the victim and serve as a deterrent to others engaged in similar fraudulent activities.
