Director Alejandro Hidalgo, known for the supernatural thriller “The Exorcism of God,” is set to helm “The Hungry One,” a new horror film slated to explore Malaysia’s Hungry Ghost Festival.
The Chenab Times has learned that Abnormal Studios, a Kuala Lumpur-based company, will be handling worldwide sales for the project and introducing it at the Asian Contents & Film Market, a segment of the Busan International Film Festival. Singapore-based Clover Films has already secured distribution rights for the film.
“The Hungry One” is expected to tap into the rich cultural tapestry and spiritual beliefs surrounding the Hungry Ghost Festival, a traditional observance in many East Asian cultures where spirits are believed to wander the living world.
Hidalgo’s previous work, “The Exorcism of God,” gained attention for its intense narrative and exploration of demonic possession. The upcoming film signifies his continued focus on supernatural themes within the horror genre.
Abnormal Studios’ involvement suggests a strategic push to bring Southeast Asian genre films to a global audience, leveraging international film markets like Busan to connect with distributors and buyers.
